Zwartkops: Purificati Strengthens Title Charge in a Cold and Closely Fought Round Three of the SunBet ZX10R Masters Cup

Round three of the SunBet ZX10R Masters Cup, staged as part of the National Extreme Festival at Zwartkops Raceway, delivered another demanding and closely fought chapter in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive superbike seasons in recent memory. The weekend began in genuinely difficult conditions, with qualifying taking place in cold temperatures and a track surface that offered limited grip and little consistency. Riders had to work hard just to find feel and confidence, and lap times reflected the challenge.

Fortunately for race day, conditions improved slightly for both races, with temperatures warming just enough to give the riders a more usable window of grip and allowing the true pace of the field to come through. Even so, the margins remained tight and the circuit still demanded absolute precision from start to finish.

In qualifying, championship leader Damion Purificati made the strongest statement of the weekend, securing pole position with a 1:04.440. It was a composed and controlled lap, reinforcing his authority at the top of the standings. Hein McMahon responded strongly to line up second with a 1:04.729, just fractions behind, while James Barson completed the front row in third with a 1:05.200, continuing his consistent rise this season.

Behind them, Trevor Westman secured fourth on the grid, ahead of Pieter Delport in fifth and AD van Dalen in sixth. Johan le Roux made a welcome return in seventh, immediately showing competitive pace after time away from racing. Reginald Seale lined up eighth, Byron Rothquel ninth, and Renatus van Niekerk tenth, continuing his steady rebuild after earlier setbacks. Dirk Stols took eleventh, Robert Ferreira twelfth, Henk Kruger thirteenth, Abrie Marais fourteenth, Stephen Galgoczy fifteenth, Tyron Piper sixteenth, Nico Zietsman seventeenth, Ian Harwood eighteenth, Keith Agliotti nineteenth, Alfie Swanepoel twentieth, and Bradley Zeeman completing the grid in twenty-first.

Race one saw Purificati convert pole into immediate control, managing the slightly improved but still slick conditions to take a composed victory. McMahon followed in second after a strong and consistent ride, while Barson finally broke through for a well-earned podium in third after a series of near misses earlier in the season.

Westman recovered well to secure fourth after early setbacks at the start in turn 1, while Henk Kruger delivered one of the standout rides of the race to take fifth. Keith Agliotti’s race was heavily affected by a braking inconsistency linked to a front wheel issue, causing pad knockback and fading brake performance, forcing him to manage the problem throughout to finish sixth.

Delport secured eighth, with Seale continuing his steady form in ninth and Renatus van Niekerk completing the top ten as he continues rebuilding confidence after his Race 2 crash at RSR. Further back, Rothquel finished eleventh ahead of Stols, le Roux, Ferreira, Abrie Marais, Galgoczy, Piper, Harwood, Zietsman, and Swanepoel. Zeeman was unable to finish as he looks to find fitness and rhythm.

Race two produced the closest battle of the weekend, with slightly improved track temperatures allowing for harder, more sustained racing throughout the field. Purificati was pushed to the absolute limit but held on to win by just 0.387 seconds over McMahon, who delivered a relentless chase to the flag and also secured Class A honours for the race. Barson once again completed the podium in third, continuing his strong and consistent form and took Class C honours once again.

Westman finished fourth ahead of Delport in fifth, who engaged in a tightly fought duel throughout the race with AD van Dalen who crossed the line for a sixth place finish, while le Roux impressed further in his return with seventh, improving steadily with every lap as race rhythm returned.

Seale took eighth, Rothquel ninth, and Renatus van Niekerk tenth, all adding valuable championship points in a tightly packed midfield. Stols finished eleventh, Ferreira twelfth, Kruger thirteenth, and Abrie Marais fourteenth. Galgoczy, Piper, Zietsman, and Harwood completed the finishers.

Agliotti’s weekend ended in frustration with a retirement in race two after the same braking issue resurfaced despite having borrowed a set of brake callipers from Westman but not yet knowing about his front wheel issue. Swanepoel’s race ended with a crash at the top of the hill, though fortunately without serious injury. Zeeman did not start race two as he felt it safer to sit it out and work on his riding fitness.

As the dust settles at Zwartkops, Purificati leaves round three with a strengthened championship lead, McMahon remains his closest challenger, and Barson’s breakthrough podium signals a growing threat in the fight for the title. With conditions improving for racing but still far from easy, the SunBet ZX10R Masters Cup continues to build into a season defined by pressure, precision, and consistency.

Without these selfless men and women, we simply wouldn’t be able to go racing. Thank you as well to the medics, race control, officials, and everyone involved behind the scenes in organizing and running the event.
Your hard work and dedication to the sport never go unnoticed.
