Suzuki Road Safety School Delivers Another Valuable Day of Rider Training at Redstar Raceway

It was that time again as riders from across South Africa gathered at Redstar Raceway for another successful Suzuki Road Safety School. While many may associate riding at a circuit with lap records and race bikes, the Suzuki Road Safety School is something entirely different. This is not a race day—it’s a dedicated rider safety day designed to help motorcyclists improve their skills, confidence and road awareness in a safe, controlled environment.

To ensure the safest possible experience, rider numbers were limited, preventing the circuit from becoming overcrowded and allowing participants to enjoy plenty of track time while receiving individual attention from the experienced instructor team. Open to B, C and D groups, the event welcomed riders of all experience levels aboard road-legal motorcycles from every manufacturer, reinforcing that safer riding is for everyone, regardless of what they ride.

Before anyone turned a wheel on the circuit, all participants attended a mandatory classroom briefing. Here, Suzuki officials and instructors covered the essential safety procedures for the day, along with many of the common mistakes riders make on public roads. Topics ranged from track etiquette and flag signals to rider awareness, vision and roadcraft—areas that are often overlooked but play a critical role in everyday riding.

One of the biggest focuses throughout the briefing was vision. Riders were reminded to always look through the corner and towards where they wanted the motorcycle to go, rather than fixating on hazards, vehicles or fellow riders. Target fixation remains one of the most common causes of rider error, and the controlled environment of a racetrack provides the perfect place to practise breaking those habits. Body position, cornering technique, throttle control, braking and smooth riding inputs were also discussed in detail before riders headed out onto the circuit.

Once the classroom session concluded, the real learning began. Groups rotated through track sessions with a team of highly experienced instructors who worked closely with participants throughout the day. Riders received guidance on racing lines—not for speed, but for safety and smoothness—along with advice on corner entry, body positioning, braking points and overall machine control. The relaxed atmosphere encouraged riders to ask questions, build confidence and steadily improve with every session.

As always, the paddock showcased an impressive variety of motorcycles, with everything from commuter bikes and adventure machines to sports bikes and naked motorcycles sharing the circuit. It highlighted exactly what the Suzuki Road Safety School is all about: bringing together riders from all backgrounds with one common goal—becoming safer, more confident motorcyclists.

At just R300 per rider, including a lunch voucher, the day once again proved to be exceptional value for money. Better still, a portion of every entry fee was donated to CANCERVIVE, ensuring that participants not only invested in their own riding skills but also contributed to a worthwhile cause.

Despite a few minor incidents during the day, Redstar Raceway’s experienced safety team dealt with every situation quickly and professionally, ensuring proceedings continued smoothly with no major disruptions. Safety remained the priority from the first briefing to the final chequered flag.
