Roczen Reigns in Detroit as Title Fight Turns on Its Head While Davies Continues 250 Dominance

Round 11 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship delivered a night of unpredictability and high drama inside Ford Field in Detroit, where a brutal and technical racetrack pushed the world’s best to their absolute limits. With one of the most punishing whoop sections of the season catching out even the most seasoned riders, the championship narrative took a dramatic twist as Ken Roczen powered to a landmark victory, while Cole Davies continued his unstoppable charge in the 250SMX class.

Returning to the “Motor City” for the 11th stop of the season, the 450SMX Main Event fired into life with Jorge Prado securing his fifth holeshot of the year. The Red Bull KTM rider led early ahead of Roczen and the returning Chase Sexton, who made an impressive comeback after missing three rounds through injury. Championship leader Hunter Lawrence found himself buried inside the top ten off the start, while Eli Tomac, second in the standings, had an even tougher opening lap from outside the top ten.

Up front, Prado initially held firm under intense pressure from Roczen, but the German soon found his rhythm and made the decisive move for the lead just a few minutes into the race. A brief but costly clash between Prado and Cooper Webb saw both riders hit the ground, ending their chances and shuffling them down the order. From there, Roczen began to stretch his advantage as Sexton moved into second, while Lawrence mounted an impressive charge through the field to reach third.

As the race settled into its rhythm, the leading trio circulated within striking distance of one another, each adapting to the demanding conditions. However, the turning point came just before the halfway mark when Lawrence crashed heavily exiting the whoops. Although he remounted, a stop in the mechanics’ area cost him a lap and effectively ended his hopes of maintaining the championship lead.

Out front, Roczen responded by upping the pace and controlling the race to perfection. Sexton held firm in second despite signs of fatigue in his return outing, while Malcolm Stewart capitalised on the chaos to move into third ahead of Tomac. Unchallenged in the closing stages, Roczen stormed to his second victory of the season — and the 25th of his career — crossing the line 7.7 seconds clear of Sexton in what was his 173rd career start.

Stewart’s third-place finish marked a breakthrough moment in his season after a difficult start to the year, with Justin Cooper and Tomac completing the top five. Lawrence, meanwhile, salvaged what he could with an 18th-place finish after a second fall.

The result significantly reshaped the championship standings, with Tomac reclaiming the points lead for the first time since early in the season. He now holds a slender four-point advantage over Lawrence, while Roczen’s victory brings him firmly into contention, just 14 points off the lead and setting the stage for a three-way title fight over the final six rounds.

In the 250SMX Eastern Divisional Main Event, the night belonged once again to Cole Davies, who delivered a sensational ride from deep in the pack to secure his third consecutive victory. Nate Thrasher initially grabbed the holeshot, but a crash in the whoops handed the lead to Seth Hammaker, who looked poised to control the race. However, Davies was on a mission.

Starting outside the top ten, the New Zealander carved his way through the field with remarkable speed, particularly through the treacherous whoop section where he was unmatched. Breaking into the top five before the halfway point, Davies quickly moved into podium contention and then into second with a decisive pass on Jo Shimoda.

With the lead in sight, Davies erased a four-second deficit to Hammaker and executed the race-winning move through the whoops with just under six minutes remaining. From there, he pulled away with authority, eventually taking the chequered flag by an astonishing 12.1-second margin.

Hammaker secured a well-earned second place after leading laps, while Shimoda completed the podium following a hard-fought battle that included a brief exchange with Coty Schock.

Davies’ dominant run extends his championship lead to nine points over Hammaker, with Shimoda a further 14 points adrift. As the series heads into its next phase, the momentum firmly sits with the young Kiwi, whose consistency and raw speed are quickly establishing him as the rider to beat in the 250 division.

Detroit proved once again why Supercross remains one of the most unpredictable and demanding championships in motorsport, where fortunes can change in an instant and only those who can adapt, endure, and execute under pressure rise to the to
