KTM 390 Adventure R Conquers IMPI Hard Enduro as Ian Rall Continues to Prove the 390 Platform
The KTM 390 Adventure R once again demonstrated that lightweight adventure motorcycles are capable of far more than many riders might expect after Ian Rall guided the machine to victory in the Iron Class at the 2026 IMPI Hard Enduro.
This year’s edition of the IMPI Hard Enduro took place in the spectacular Northern Drakensberg near Bergville, with competitors based from a remote start and finish venue rather than a resort. The Time Trial was held in a similar area to the 2025 event below Hlalanathi, while Friday’s and Saturday’s racing started and finished from a new location closer to Bergville in the Mnweni direction. The demanding route featured brutal hill climbs, technical rock gardens, deep river crossings and relentless terrain that tested both rider and machine from start to finish.
Rall mastered the challenging conditions to secure victory in the Iron Class, adding another impressive achievement to the growing list of successes for KTM’s lightweight 390 platform. His performance proved that the KTM 390 Adventure R is more than capable of taking on events normally associated with purpose-built hard enduro motorcycles.
The victory followed another standout performance by Rall at the legendary Roof of Africa, where he competed aboard the KTM 390 Enduro R in the Iron Class and secured a podium finish. The result further highlighted the versatility and capability of KTM’s lightweight single-cylinder platform in one of the world’s toughest off-road events.
The IMPI Hard Enduro also formed an important part of Rall’s preparation for a return to the 2026 Roof of Africa, providing the perfect proving ground with its combination of steep climbs, technical trails and punishing natural obstacles.
Despite competing in one of South Africa’s toughest hard enduro events, the KTM 390 Adventure R remained remarkably close to standard specification. The only modifications included a full exhaust system with the catalytic converter removed, an electronics bypass, revised fuel mapping, an upgraded airbox and a 12-tooth front sprocket to improve low-speed technical performance. The bike also ran mousse inserts fitted with Maluti tyres to eliminate the risk of punctures over the demanding course.
Ian Rall’s victory once again showcased the impressive capabilities of KTM’s 390 range. Whether aboard the KTM 390 Adventure R or the KTM 390 Enduro R, the platform has proven that lightweight motorcycles can successfully tackle some of Southern Africa’s toughest hard enduro and adventure riding challenges.
