Honda’s New 400cc Four-Cylinder Concepts Blend Heritage with Modern Innovation

Honda has pulled the covers off two exciting new concept motorcycles that celebrate the return of the inline four-cylinder engine to the 400cc class. The CB400 SUPER FOUR E-Clutch Concept and CBR400R FOUR E-Clutch Concept represent two very different interpretations of Honda’s design philosophy, yet both share the same mission: to redefine what a modern middleweight motorcycle should be.
Beyond the styling and engineering, the unveiling of these motorcycles marks an important milestone for Honda. The company’s return to the small-capacity four-cylinder market has taken considerably longer than many enthusiasts expected, but these concepts confirm that the project is very much alive and aimed at international markets. While the CB400 SUPER FOUR revives one of Honda’s most iconic names, the CBR400R FOUR is positioned as a direct rival to Kawasaki’s hugely successful Ninja ZX-4R, signalling Honda’s intention to compete once again in a segment it once dominated.


Interestingly, neither motorcycle is entirely new to keen observers. Honda first showcased visually identical 502cc versions at China’s CIMA Motorcycle Show in late 2025. Those larger-capacity models were developed primarily to satisfy China’s growing appetite for compact four-cylinder motorcycles, a market that has expanded rapidly in recent years. However, despite the public debut, Honda has remained remarkably quiet, revealing very little regarding pricing, specifications or launch timing. The Chinese-market 502cc motorcycles will be manufactured by the Wuyang-Honda joint venture, while the newly revealed 400cc models are expected to roll off the production line at Honda’s Kumamoto factory in Japan.
The reason for offering two engine capacities comes down largely to Japan’s licensing and taxation regulations. In Japan, motorcycles below the 400cc threshold benefit from favourable licensing, insurance and ownership costs, making the 399cc versions particularly attractive to domestic buyers. Outside Japan, where those regulations don’t apply, the larger 502cc versions are expected to become Honda’s primary offering.
Type-approval documentation has already revealed several details about the larger-capacity models. The new 502cc inline four-cylinder engine is expected to produce around 71 horsepower while weighing approximately 188 kg (415 lb). The Japanese-market 399cc version is anticipated to deliver roughly 60 horsepower while retaining the same character and high-revving personality. Importantly, this is not simply a reworked version of the legendary CB400 engine that remained in production from 1992 until 2022. Instead, Honda has developed an entirely new inline four-cylinder powerplant from the ground up.
Both motorcycles also showcase Honda’s latest-generation E-Clutch technology. Unlike a traditional automatic transmission, the system retains a conventional clutch lever and gearbox but automatically manages clutch engagement and disengagement during starts and gear changes. Riders can still operate the clutch manually whenever they choose, but the technology removes the possibility of stalling the engine while significantly reducing rider workload in traffic.
Honda has also been quietly laying the groundwork for a global rollout. Trademark applications for the CB400 SUPER FOUR name have already been filed in Japan and Thailand, while the company has also secured protection for the CBR500R FOUR name across multiple international markets. This suggests Honda expects the larger-capacity version to become its primary global model, particularly as the company already offers several twin-cylinder CB500 motorcycles in markets outside Japan.
Although Honda has yet to confirm whether either model will officially reach North America, trademark filings indicate plans to introduce the motorcycles in Europe, Asia and several South American countries. With Kawasaki successfully establishing the Ninja ZX-4R as a legitimate four-cylinder sportbike in international markets—including the United States—it would not be surprising to see Honda eventually bring the CBR400R FOUR or CBR500R FOUR to those same regions.

Reinventing an Icon: CB400 SUPER FOUR E-Clutch Concept
Few motorcycles hold the status of the Honda CB400 SUPER FOUR. Since its introduction in 1992, it has become the benchmark for naked roadsters in Japan and one of Honda’s most recognisable motorcycles.

Leading the project was modeler Asato Kato, who had dreamed of working on the CB since his high school days. For him, the biggest challenge wasn’t simply designing a new motorcycle—it was answering a far more fundamental question: What defines a standard motorcycle in today’s world?
Kato believes that modern motorcycle styling has become increasingly aggressive, filled with sharp lines and complex surfaces in the pursuit of standing out. In doing so, he feels the timeless image of a motorcycle—a round headlight, a beautifully sculpted steel fuel tank and a clean rear section—has slowly disappeared.

Rather than chasing the latest styling trends, Honda deliberately chose to redefine what a classic motorcycle should look like. The goal was to create something instantly recognisable as a motorcycle while making that simplicity feel fresh again.

For Kato, joining the project was deeply personal. When he learned Honda would be developing an all-new 400cc inline four-cylinder engine, he was determined to become part of the programme. He repeatedly requested the opportunity until management eventually agreed, something he says reflects Honda’s culture of allowing passionate engineers and designers to pursue the projects they truly believe in.

Once development began, however, another challenge emerged. What exactly makes a motorcycle a “CB”?
Discussions within Honda revealed that every generation had a different answer. Some designers pointed to the legendary CB750 Four, while others believed the Dream CB400 Four represented the true essence of the CB name. Although opinions differed, Kato eventually discovered a common thread running through every generation—a sense of dignity, balance and understated confidence that has always defined the CB family.

Perhaps nowhere was this philosophy more evident than in the motorcycle’s fuel tank.
While many modern motorcycles rely on plastic tank covers due to increasingly complex frame designs, Kato insisted the new CB400 had to feature a genuine steel fuel tank. To him, it wasn’t simply about nostalgia; the proportions of a steel tank are central to the way a rider visually connects with the motorcycle.

Achieving this proved to be one of the project’s greatest engineering challenges. Working closely with engineers, Kato personally refined clay models by hand, adjusting the design millimetre by millimetre until beauty, practicality and manufacturability could coexist. Every detail—from weld locations to steering clearance and production-line feasibility—was carefully evaluated before the team was convinced the steel tank could become reality.

Another major highlight is Honda’s newly developed inline four-cylinder engine. Rather than hiding its mechanical beauty behind excessive bodywork, Kato wanted the engine itself to become a visual centrepiece.
His inspiration came from the iconic Dream CB400 Four of the 1970s and its famous “Oh, 400” advertising campaign. Even more than 50 years later, Kato believes the motorcycle’s elegant silhouette and sweeping four-into-one exhaust headers remain among the most beautiful designs Honda has ever produced. The new CB400 echoes that heritage with gracefully curved exhaust pipes that immediately recall its legendary predecessor while showcasing the beauty of Honda’s new engine.

As development neared completion, the entire design, engineering and testing team travelled together for final evaluation rides. Sharing the same accommodation and riding the finished motorcycles together created a unique sense of achievement that Kato still regards as one of the most memorable moments of the project.

Those final test rides convinced the entire team that they had created something special.
The CB400 SUPER FOUR E-Clutch Concept is more than a revival of an iconic name. It represents Honda’s vision of what the modern standard motorcycle should be—one that combines timeless styling, meticulous craftsmanship and the pure joy of riding.


A New Direction: CBR400R FOUR E-Clutch Concept
While the CB400 celebrates classic design, the CBR400R FOUR E-Clutch Concept explores an entirely different direction.
The global 400-500cc supersport segment has become fiercely competitive, with manufacturers increasingly embracing highly detailed, mechanically inspired styling. Rather than following that trend, designer Kazuki Watanabe intentionally chose the opposite approach.
His vision centred on what he calls the “aesthetics of subtraction.”

Instead of filling every surface with complex creases and aggressive shapes, the CBR400R features clean, flowing bodywork with carefully sculpted surfaces that appear almost carved from solid material. Inspired partly by modern electric vehicle design, the motorcycle relies on a handful of bold character lines to create a powerful sense of speed and motion.

According to Watanabe, such simplicity is surprisingly difficult to achieve. Every surface must be absolutely perfect because there are very few design elements available to disguise imperfections.
To develop those flowing surfaces, Honda combined traditional clay modelling with virtual reality design tools. VR allowed designers to evaluate proportions and appearance in different environments, while physical clay models remained essential for judging subtle surface tension, reflections and the way light interacted with every curve. Rapidly moving between digital and physical development enabled the team to create a clean yet visually striking final design.

The styling theme was internally known as “Digital Influencer.”
Recognising the importance of social media, Honda wanted to create a motorcycle riders would naturally want to photograph, share and showcase online. Extensive research into current digital trends influenced not only the motorcycle’s shape but also its colour and graphics.


Unlike most CBR models, the concept wears a metallic silver finish that deliberately avoids distracting from the bodywork itself. With only subtle accent colours, the sculpted surfaces become the true focal point, giving the motorcycle a futuristic yet highly mechanical appearance.
Honda also reimagined the motorcycle’s lighting.
Traditional CBR models are known for their aggressive twin-headlight appearance, but the new concept introduces a full-width V-shaped daytime running light that creates a fresh front-end identity while cleverly integrating projector headlights to preserve the unmistakable CBR character.

Even the rear lighting received the same level of attention. Rather than making the taillight itself the centrepiece, designers focused on how its illumination reflects across the surrounding bodywork, creating a unique visual signature from behind.
Throughout development, Watanabe remained committed to creating a genuinely distinctive motorcycle rather than compromising for simplicity or lower costs.

The concept features numerous bespoke components, including a completely unique rear frame. While developing custom parts inevitably increases engineering complexity, Watanabe believed a motorcycle could only succeed if every element supported the overall vision.

One example is the riding position.
Although lowering the seat height generally improves rider confidence, it often compromises the aggressive appearance of a sportbike. Honda’s custom rear frame allows riders to sink deeper into the seat, making it easier to place both feet firmly on the ground while preserving the high-tail, race-inspired silhouette.

The newly developed inline four-cylinder engine also reflects Honda’s pursuit of functional beauty. The engine architecture is entirely new—the first completely fresh 400cc four-cylinder design from Honda in around three decades. Particular attention was given to the arrangement of the four exhaust headers, with engineers and designers working closely together to ensure they remain visible through carefully shaped openings in the fairing.
For Watanabe, that balance between engineering and aesthetics ultimately defines the motorcycle.

His hope is simple: riders will enjoy owning it, riding it, keeping it immaculate and proudly sharing it with others.
Tradition Meets Tomorrow
Although they take very different styling approaches, both the CB400 SUPER FOUR E-Clutch Concept and the CBR400R FOUR E-Clutch Concept are built around the same philosophy.
The CB400 honours Honda’s rich heritage by redefining the classic standard motorcycle for a new generation, while the CBR400R demonstrates how minimalist design, digital-era thinking and cutting-edge engineering can shape the future of sportbike styling.
Whether these motorcycles ultimately arrive as 400cc models, 500cc variants or both, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Honda is serious about bringing the high-revving inline four back to the middleweight class. For riders who have long waited for a true successor to the legendary CB400 SUPER FOUR—and for those seeking a fresh alternative to the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R—Honda’s latest concepts suggest the wait may finally be coming to an end.
