From School Runs to Sand Dunes: South African Dad Alex Torrão Takes On Dakar

By MRWadmin

In Johannesburg, entrepreneur, husband and father of three daughters Alex Torrão lives a life defined by responsibility. By day, it’s business strategy and boardrooms. By afternoon, it’s school runs and family time. But in the early mornings and late nights, Torrão is preparing for one of the toughest endurance challenges on earth — the Dakar Rally.

Through his campaign #DAD2DAKAR, Torrão is not chasing podium finishes or factory contracts. He is chasing something far more personal: a place on the start line of the world’s most demanding rally-raid.

Raised between South Africa, Portugal and Macau, Torrão’s love for motorcycles began on the rural trails of Portugal. Like many riders, he grew up captivated by Dakar’s unforgiving terrain — vast deserts, towering dunes and endless kilometres of navigation. For most, that dream fades as careers and family life take precedence. Torrão chose not to let it go.

“The goal isn’t to win Dakar,” he says. “It’s to stand at that start line knowing I didn’t give up on a childhood dream.”

Unlike full-time professionals, Torrão must fit rally preparation into an already full life. Training camps are carefully scheduled around business obligations. International qualifiers are balanced with family commitments. His pursuit is methodical, structured and grounded in discipline.

The 2025 season marked significant progress. Torrão completed the FIM South African Safari Rally, the Giants Adventure Rally Botswana and the Fenek Rally Morocco — each event an essential step toward Dakar qualification. These rallies tested his endurance, navigation skills and mental resilience, while reinforcing the logistical precision required at international level.

His 2026 calendar expands further, with events planned in Argentina and Morocco, along with the demanding Africa Eco Race. Together, they form a calculated two-year roadmap aimed at earning his place at Dakar.

Globally, the Dakar Rally remains one of motorsport’s most watched events, broadcast in nearly 190 countries and followed by millions worldwide. But for Torrão, the meaning runs deeper than global exposure.

It represents resilience — the refusal to let ambition expire with age.

It represents modern fatherhood — proving to his daughters that responsibility and bold dreams can coexist.

It represents late-life ambition — the courage to pursue something extraordinary when the stakes are real.

#DAD2DAKAR is more than a motorsport campaign. It is a statement about perseverance and purpose. It is about showing children that dreams remain valid long after childhood ends, and reminding men that fatherhood does not require the abandonment of ambition.

In a sporting world fixated on trophies and podiums, Alex Torrão is focused on something more profound.

Because sometimes, the bravest victory of all is simply showing up.
