Ducati Hypermotard V2 SP: The Ultimate Expression of the Hyper

Some motorcycles become icons. They are machines that communicate emotion, adrenaline and pure fun before they have even moved. The Ducati Hypermotard is one of those motorcycles, a machine that has always defied a simple definition. It was never quite a traditional supermotard, which is why Ducati chose to call it something more: Hyper.
Twenty years after Ducati presented the original Hypermotard prototype at EICMA 2005, where it won the Best of Show award, the Borgo Panigale manufacturer is writing another chapter in the story of its iconic fun bike with the new Hypermotard V2 and, at the sharp end of the range, the Hypermotard V2 SP.
The fourth-generation Hypermotard represents a complete redesign, combining the unmistakable character of the original with an entirely new technical platform. For the SP, Ducati has taken that formula even further, creating a lighter, sharper and more sophisticated motorcycle aimed at riders who want to extract maximum performance from every corner.
The result is the most focused Hypermotard yet.
Inspired by the original 2005 prototype, the new Hypermotard V2 SP retains the distinctive styling cues that have made the model instantly recognisable. The double-wing fuel tank, compact front end, dual exhausts beneath the tail and floating rear light all reference the original Hypermotard, while being interpreted through a much more contemporary design language.

The SP takes the aggressive styling even further with its dedicated livery celebrating two decades since the original prototype appeared. The oversized graphics extend onto the front beak, while white forged aluminium wheels create a striking contrast. Gold Öhlins suspension, Brembo M50 brake calipers and a carbon-fibre front mudguard complete the racing-inspired appearance.
This is not simply a styling exercise, however. Almost every element of the SP has been developed to improve performance, agility and rider confidence.

At the centre of the new Hypermotard V2 SP is Ducati’s 890 cc V2 engine, the lightest twin-cylinder engine the company has ever produced. Weighing just 54.4 kg, the new engine represents a 6.42 kg reduction compared with the previous Testastretta 11°.
Producing 120 hp at 10,750 rpm and 94 Nm of maximum torque at 8,250 rpm, it is the most powerful engine ever fitted to a Hypermotard. The engine can rev beyond 11,000 rpm, but its strong low- and mid-range performance is arguably just as important for a motorcycle designed around instant response and corner-exit acceleration.
Ducati’s IVT variable intake valve timing system helps deliver generous performance across the rev range while maintaining a responsive connection between the rider’s right hand and the rear wheel. Around 70% of maximum torque is available from just 3,000 rpm, providing strong acceleration from low and medium engine speeds.
Shorter gear ratios and increased torque throughout the gearbox further sharpen the SP’s response, making it quicker and more immediate than its predecessor. Ducati has also concentrated on reducing maintenance demands, with valve-clearance checks scheduled at an impressive 45,000 km.

The riding position remains central to the Hypermotard experience. Wide handlebars provide plenty of leverage, while the motorcycle remains narrow between the rider’s legs, creating the commanding and connected riding position expected from a supermotard-inspired machine.
Ducati has also paid particular attention to rider connection. The seat and side panels feature a textured surface inspired by the Ducati Panigale V4, increasing grip and helping the rider maintain a secure position while braking, accelerating or moving around the motorcycle.
The SP weighs just 177 kg without fuel, representing a 14 kg reduction compared with the previous Hypermotard 950 SP. That reduction in mass, combined with the increased performance of the new V2 engine, contributes to a motorcycle that is lighter, more agile and more responsive.
One of the biggest differences between the standard Hypermotard V2 and the V2 SP is the suspension package. The SP features fully adjustable Öhlins NIX30 48 mm upside-down front forks paired with a fully adjustable Öhlins STX46 rear monoshock.

The premium Öhlins components are designed to provide greater support during hard braking while also improving the suspension’s ability to absorb smaller imperfections in the road surface. The result is greater precision, stability and control, particularly when the pace increases or the motorcycle is taken onto a racetrack.
The chassis uses Ducati’s lightweight monocoque frame, with the engine serving as a structural element while also incorporating the airbox. A steel rear subframe and aluminium double-sided swingarm complete the package, with the swingarm drawing inspiration from Ducati’s Hollow Symmetrical Swingarm used on the Panigale V4.

The SP’s lightweight forged aluminium wheels are another important part of its performance package. Measuring 3.50 x 17 inches at the front and 5.50 x 17 inches at the rear, they save 1.56 kg compared with the cast wheels used on the standard V2.
Reducing rotational and unsprung mass allows the motorcycle to change direction more quickly while improving trajectory accuracy and overall agility. The wheels are fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV Corsa tyres in 120/70 front and 190/55 rear sizes, providing a high-performance combination suited to spirited road riding and track use.
For riders wanting to explore the SP’s capabilities even further on circuit, Pirelli Diablo Superbike slicks and alternative supersport tyre options are also available.
Braking performance has been upgraded to match the motorcycle’s sporting ability. Twin 320 mm front discs are paired with Brembo M50 monobloc calipers and a PR16/21 radial master cylinder, providing strong braking performance and the precise control needed for aggressive corner entry.

The Hypermotard V2 SP is also equipped with Ducati’s latest-generation electronics package, built around a six-axis inertial measurement unit. The system constantly monitors the motorcycle’s movement and position, allowing the various electronic rider aids to intervene with a high degree of precision.
Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Wheelie Control and Engine Brake Control all feature multiple intervention levels, allowing the motorcycle to be adapted to different conditions and riding styles.
Four Riding Modes – Race, Sport, Road and Wet – allow the character of the motorcycle to be changed according to the riding environment. Riders can also adjust individual electronic parameters to suit their preferences.

The Cornering ABS system offers four levels of intervention. Levels 1 and 2 are designed with track riding in mind, with Level 2 incorporating Ducati’s Slide by Brake function, allowing experienced riders to explore controlled rear-wheel movement during corner entry. Levels 3 and 4 are aimed more towards road riding, providing increased safety while maintaining a natural riding experience.
All of this technology is presented through a new 5-inch full-TFT dashboard with an 800 x 480 resolution. Three information layouts, known as Road, Road Pro and Track, allow the display to present the most relevant information for different riding environments.

A new petal-style joystick on the left switchgear provides control over the display and electronic settings, while Ducati Quick Shift 2.0 delivers faster and more direct gear changes.
The SP also comes equipped with Ducati Power Launch and a Pit Limiter as standard, reinforcing its track-focused character.
Despite its performance credentials, the Hypermotard V2 SP remains a motorcycle designed to be enjoyed on the road. Its upright ergonomics, strong low- and mid-range torque, lightweight construction and sophisticated electronics make it an entertaining road motorcycle, while the premium suspension, brakes and wheels give it the ability to transition naturally onto a racetrack.

For owners looking to personalise or further enhance their motorcycle, Ducati Performance offers an extensive range of accessories. These include a Termignoni exhaust system, with a road-homologated double silencer featuring titanium sleeves and carbon-fibre end caps.
For track use, a complete non-homologated exhaust system is available. Ducati claims that this system increases power by 3.6 hp, reduces weight by 4 kg and provides an even more engaging exhaust note.
A range of carbon-fibre and billet aluminium components is also available, including carbon-fibre mudguards and engine covers, a fuel tank cap, fork sliders and motard-style footpegs and footrests. Riders can also add the Ducati Multimedia System for Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, Turn-by-Turn navigation for connected road riding and the Lap Timer Pro system with GPS functionality for track use.
The Ducati Hypermotard V2 SP represents the clearest expression yet of the philosophy that has made the Hypermotard so distinctive. It combines the lightness and attitude of a supermotard with the performance of Ducati’s latest 890 cc V2 engine, while premium Öhlins suspension, forged wheels, Brembo M50 brakes, Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV Corsa tyres and advanced electronics push the motorcycle firmly towards the sporting end of the spectrum.

With 120 hp, 94 Nm of torque and a kerb weight of 177 kg without fuel, the SP delivers an impressive combination of performance and agility. More importantly, it retains the quality that has always defined the Hyper: fun.
Twenty years after the original prototype made its debut, Ducati has taken the Hypermotard concept into a new generation without losing the personality that made it an icon.
