Ducati Formula 73: A Timeless Tribute Reborn

By MRWadmin

The Ducati Formula 73 blends mechanical honesty with post-heritage style and proven performance, creating a motorcycle that feels just as special parked in a collection as it does carving through a Sunday morning ride. It is a machine that demands respect — not through excess, but through authenticity, detail and lineage.

Penned by Centro Stile Ducati, every line of the Formula 73 tells a deliberate story. The historic silver and aquamarine blue livery pays direct homage to the iconic 750 Super Sport Desmo, while the vertical gold stripe across the tank recalls the ingenious design of the legendary 750 Imola Desmo. That gold band is more than decoration — it references the translucent section of the original fiberglass race tanks that allowed riders to visually check fuel levels mid-race, a subtle nod to Ducati’s relentless racing innovation in the early 1970s.

The Café Racer character is unmistakable. Clip-on handlebars with bar-end mirrors, a compact front fairing and a sharply tapered tail deliver an unmistakable 70s silhouette. Beneath it all, the steel trellis frame reinforces the connection to its Super Sport Desmo inspiration, while the engine itself becomes a focal point — finished in silver with a classic Ducati logo, blending period-correct aesthetics with modern engineering precision.

At its heart lies an 803 cc Desmodue L-twin engine, faithful to the technical principles that shaped Ducati’s legend. Featuring two-valve desmodromic timing and Euro 5+ compliance, it produces 73 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and 65.2 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. It is a powerplant designed not just for performance, but for character — responsive, mechanical and engaging. Mated to Ducati Quick Shift as standard, alongside traction control, Cornering ABS and two Riding Modes, the Formula 73 combines analogue soul with contemporary safety and usability.

Rolling on 17-inch spoked wheels wrapped in Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres, the Formula 73 delivers manageability with dynamic intent. With a wet weight (without fuel) of 183 kg and a seat height of 808 mm, it strikes a balance between agility and everyday rideability, while a 12,000 km valve clearance interval keeps ownership practical.

Premium detailing elevates the experience even further. Rizoma billet aluminium components — including brake and clutch levers with integrated oil reservoirs, footpegs and an exclusive fuel cap — come as standard equipment, adding both refinement and exclusivity. The silencer, developed in collaboration with Termignoni, is tailored specifically for this model, delivering a deep, resonant soundtrack that complements its heritage-driven design.

As a true collector’s piece, the Formula 73 is produced in a strictly limited series of 873 numbered units. Each motorcycle features a steering plate bearing its model name and individual serial number. Owners also receive a certificate of authenticity, duplicate archival imagery from the era and original design sketches from Centro Stile Ducati, all presented in a dedicated collector’s box.

The inspiration behind the Formula 73 traces back to the Ducati 750 Super Sport Desmo, itself derived from the 750 Imola Desmo that secured victory at the 1972 Imola 200. That triumph — achieved by Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari — cemented Ducati’s reputation and introduced desmodromic valve timing to production motorcycles for the first time. The Formula 73 captures that rebellious spirit and reinterprets it for the modern era, preserving a legacy while embracing contemporary performance and refinement.

More than a motorcycle, the Ducati Formula 73 is a piece of living history — a contemporary urban Café Racer that carries the DNA of Borgo Panigale’s golden racing years. For collectors and riders alike, it represents a rare opportunity to own a numbered chapter of Ducati’s enduring story.
