Coenen and de Wolf Shine Bright in the Deep Sands of Lommel – MXGP of Flanders Delivers Drama, Determination, and Glory

LOMMEL (Flanders, Belgium), 3 August 2025 – The sun broke through the clouds over Lommel to spotlight one of the toughest and most legendary tracks in motocross—and it didn’t disappoint. Round 15 of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship brought thrilling racing, massive crowds, and standout performances from both seasoned stars and rising talents.

MXGP: Coenen Fights Back for Home Glory
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen gave Belgian fans a weekend to remember, overcoming a gritty first moto to clinch his first-ever MXGP overall win at Lommel, and his fifth career GP victory in the premier class. The 18-year-old thrilled the 37,700-strong crowd with a daring pass on Romain Febvre in Race 2, eventually breaking away to win in front of his home crowd.

Despite the shared points tally (47 each), Febvre’s 1-2 result was enough to maintain his Championship lead, now at 734 points, just nine ahead of Coenen’s 725. The Kawasaki Racing Team rider controlled Race 1 but had no answer for Coenen’s pace late in Race 2.

Calvin Vlaanderen (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP) rounded out the podium with a composed and resilient ride, earning his second podium of the season, despite a small crash in Race 2 that almost cost him the box.

MXGP Race 1 Highlights:
- Febvre took the holeshot and set the pace, with Coenen moving quickly through the pack after passing Herlings over the wall jump.
- The two title rivals traded blows, with Febvre repassing Coenen after a brief lead change.
- Vlaanderen passed Isak Gifting late in the moto for third.
- Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM) showed strong speed early on but faded after a crash to finish eighth.
MXGP Race 2 Highlights:
- Herlings grabbed his first Fox Holeshot Award since 2021 but crashed multiple times in the brutal sand, eventually finishing eighth again.
- Coenen made decisive passes on Vlaanderen and Bonacorsi, before using his wall-jump line again to surprise Febvre and take control of the race.
- Andrea Bonacorsi and Glenn Coldenhoff (Fantic Factory Racing) took third and fourth, showing their pace in the deep sand.
- Privateers Hakon Fredriksen and Jan Pancar impressed with career-best rides.
MXGP Overall Top 3:
- Lucas Coenen (KTM) – 47 points
- Romain Febvre (Kawasaki) – 47 points
- Calvin Vlaanderen (Yamaha) – 36 points
Lucas Coenen: “Winning in front of the home crowd and my family is the best feeling ever. Romain has the red plate, but we’re closing the gap, and I’m enjoying every part of the way.”
Romain Febvre: “I thought I could win again in Race 2, but Lucas had better lines. Just losing one point is okay—it’s still a good day for the Championship.”
Calvin Vlaanderen: “Lommel is no joke! I’m super happy to put Yamaha on the podium with my family here. Let’s keep this momentum going.”

MX2: De Wolf Dominates to Climb the Standings
In MX2, Kay de Wolf (Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing) was simply untouchable. The reigning Champion delivered a flawless 1-1-1 weekend—winning the Qualifying Race, both GP motos, and the Fox Holeshot in Race 2—to move into second in the World Championship standings, just 38 points behind red plate holder Simon Längenfelder.

Camden Mc Lellan (Monster Energy Triumph Racing) was once again at home in the sand, finishing 2-3 for his second career podium and matching his best-ever result. Sacha Coenen showed grit and speed across the weekend, salvaging third overall despite multiple crashes.

MX2 Race 1 Highlights:
- De Wolf led nearly every lap after capitalizing on a small Coenen mistake on lap one.
- Mc Lellan held off pressure from Adamo to take second.
- Sacha Coenen recovered from two falls to finish fourth but was handed a five-point penalty for a yellow flag infringement.

MX2 Race 2 Highlights:
- Coenen again grabbed the holeshot, but De Wolf passed him on lap two and pulled away to win by over 11 seconds.
- Mc Lellan charged from outside the top 10 to pass Längenfelder for third.
- Andrea Adamo rebounded from a first-turn collision to finish eighth and take fourth overall.
- Privateer Jens Walvoort and wildcard Nicolaj Skovbjerg continued to impress inside the top 10.
MX2 Overall Top 3:
- Kay de Wolf (Husqvarna) – 50 points
- Camden Mc Lellan (Triumph) – 42 points
- Sacha Coenen (KTM) – 40 points
Kay de Wolf: “This was the goal, and I’m happy everything I worked on this week paid off. Thanks to the team and the fans—Arnhem’s up next, and I can’t wait!”

Camden Mc Lellan: “It’s been a long time coming, but we got it done! I passed some big hitters today—hopefully a win is coming soon!”

Sacha Coenen: “Third wasn’t the goal in front of my home crowd, but we’ll take the podium and build from here.”
