Clint Seller Dominates on Return as Sunbet ZX10R Masters Cup Delivers Thrills at Aldo Scribante

The Sunbet ZX10R Masters Cup arrived at Aldo Scribante Raceway in Gqeberha for Round 4 of the 2026 National Extreme Festival, producing another outstanding display of close, competitive racing as one of South Africa’s premier one-make motorcycle championships continued to showcase the incredible depth of talent throughout the field.

The technical 2.4 km Eastern Cape circuit presented riders with an immediate challenge as Friday’s qualifying sessions were heavily influenced by damp conditions. With grip at a premium and several wet patches remaining around the circuit, riders found it difficult to put together representative lap times as they searched for confidence on the slippery surface. The challenge was even greater for a number of competitors making their first appearance at Aldo Scribante, with the changing conditions forcing them to learn one of the country’s most demanding circuits while trying to find speed.

Two major storylines dominated the paddock heading into the weekend. The first was the debut of Darryn Upton, who joined the Sunbet ZX10R Masters Cup after many years away from national motorcycle racing. Upton’s weekend almost came to an early end after mechanical problems sidelined his own motorcycle before the event. Fortunately, fellow competitor Hein McMahon, who was unable to race at Round 4, stepped in by generously loaning Upton his Kawasaki ZX-10R, allowing the experienced rider to make a welcome return to competitive action.

The second major storyline was the return of two-time and reigning Sunbet ZX10R Masters Cup Champion Clint Seller. After spending time on the sidelines recovering from corrective surgery, Seller returned to the championship aboard his King Price Extreme Kawasaki and immediately reminded everyone why he remains the benchmark in the series.

As the circuit dried overnight, Saturday morning’s fourth and final qualifying session finally gave riders the opportunity to show their true pace. Lap times tumbled throughout the session as conditions improved, with Seller producing a sensational 1:02.389 to secure pole position ahead of Damion Purificati and Keith Agliotti. Trevor Westman and Class C front-runner James Barson completed the top five after another highly competitive qualifying performance.

One of the standout statistics from qualifying was the closeness of the entire field. Every rider lapped inside the 1:10 bracket, a remarkable achievement considering the difficult conditions encountered just 24 hours earlier. As confidence in both the circuit and the motorcycles grew, lap times continued to improve throughout the weekend, once again proving why the Sunbet ZX10R Masters Cup remains one of South Africa’s most fiercely contested motorcycle racing championships and one of the longest-running one-make motorcycle racing series in the world.

Race 1 began with disappointment for Stephen Galgoczy, whose weekend suffered an early setback after a chain problem on the warm-up lap forced him to retire before the race had officially started.

Once the lights went out, however, Seller was simply untouchable. Looking as though he had never been away from racing, the defending champion immediately settled into a relentless rhythm, opening a comfortable advantage over the chasing pack before taking victory by more than seven seconds.

Behind him, Purificati continued his consistent championship campaign with another superb second-place finish, while Agliotti completed the overall podium ahead of Trevor Westman.

Further behind, the racing was just as entertaining. James Barson produced another outstanding performance to claim Class C honours, while AD van Dalen, Henk Kruger and Darryn Upton enjoyed hard-fought battles throughout the race. The midfield remained incredibly close, with positions changing repeatedly as riders fought for every point.

The competitiveness of the championship was perfectly reflected in the lap times. Seller’s fastest lap of 1:02.565 set the benchmark, while Nico Zietsman, the final classified finisher, still managed an impressive 1:08.701. The entire field was covered by just over six seconds per lap, underlining how evenly matched the identical Kawasaki ZX-10Rs have become.

Race 2 produced another action-packed encounter as the riders continued to raise the pace. Seller once again controlled proceedings from the front, setting the fastest lap of the entire weekend with a blistering 1:02.336 before completing a flawless double victory on his return to the championship.

Purificati once again secured second place overall to claim maximum Class B honours and further strengthen his championship lead, while Trevor Westman rounded out the overall podium after another impressive ride. James Barson again topped Class C, while AD van Dalen, Darryn Upton, Henk Kruger and Renatus van Niekerk featured in another series of closely contested midfield battles.

Unfortunately, Bradley Zeeman’s race came to a heartbreaking end with just one lap remaining. After forgetting to check his fuel level between races, Zeeman ran out of fuel during the closing stages and was forced to pull into the pits, bringing an otherwise promising Race 2 to a premature conclusion.

Kruger endured a frustrating weekend after battling setup, gearing and minor mechanical issues, but continual adjustments by the team saw the motorcycle improve with every outing, allowing him to finish the weekend on a far more competitive pace.

One of the standout achievements of the meeting was the clean, respectful racing throughout the field. Despite two fiercely contested races and countless overtaking manoeuvres, every rider completed the weekend without a single crash—an outstanding reflection of both the professionalism of the competitors and the high standard of racing within the Sunbet ZX10R Masters Cup.

Seller’s dream return earned him the overall victory and maximum Class A points, while Purificati continued his impressive championship campaign by taking another Class B victory and strengthening his position at the top of the standings. Barson maintained his outstanding form by once again claiming the Class C honours after another faultless weekend.

With four rounds now complete and five still to come in the 2026 season, the championship battle is only beginning to intensify. Seller’s dominant comeback has immediately re-established him as a race-winning force, while Purificati continues to build valuable momentum in the fight for the Class B title. Barson remains the rider to beat in Class C as the Sunbet ZX10R Masters Cup heads into the second half of what promises to be another thrilling season.
