2027 KTM 690 RALLY: KTM Returns to Its Rally Raid Roots

By MRWadmin

KTM is returning to its Rally Raid roots with the all-new 2027 KTM 690 RALLY, bringing a serious long-distance off-road machine back to the LC4 platform and creating what KTM describes as the spiritual successor to the iconic KTM 640 ADVENTURE. Based on the proven KTM 690 ENDURO R platform, the new 690 RALLY takes the lightweight dual-sport concept and gives it a much stronger focus on range, stability, rally-inspired performance and long-distance exploration.

The philosophy behind the new motorcycle is simple: go further and ride longer. KTM has designed the 690 RALLY for riders who see the real adventure as beginning when the pavement ends, combining the agility of a lightweight enduro machine with the endurance needed for extended off-road travel. Rather than simply being another adventure motorcycle, the 690 RALLY has been developed to bridge the gap between lightweight enduro agility and rally-level endurance, making it particularly appealing to riders who want to explore remote terrain without moving into a considerably larger and heavier adventure motorcycle.

At the centre of the motorcycle’s long-distance capability is its fuel capacity. The 690 RALLY features dual front-mounted fuel tanks that add seven litres to the existing 13-litre rear tank, bringing total capacity to approximately 20 litres. This additional capacity is a major advantage when travelling through remote areas where fuel stations can be few and far between, allowing riders to venture considerably further between refuelling stops.

The fuel system also forms an important part of the motorcycle’s distinctive rally-inspired design. A purpose-built rally tower and integrated windshield transform the front of the 690 RALLY, creating a cockpit inspired by KTM’s competition machines while providing additional wind protection for longer rides. The rally tower incorporates LED lighting derived from KTM’s 450 RALLY REPLICA, while the overall bodywork has been designed to allow the rider to move freely between seated and standing positions.

The cockpit itself features a 4.2-inch TFT display, providing the rider with key motorcycle information, navigation functions and access to the motorcycle’s electronic settings. The 690 RALLY also features dedicated ride modes, allowing the rider to tailor the motorcycle’s behaviour according to the terrain and conditions.

Power comes from KTM’s latest-generation 692.7cc LC4 single-cylinder, four-stroke engine. The liquid-cooled powerplant produces a claimed 79 PS and 73 Nm of torque and is paired with a six-speed transmission. Keihin engine management incorporates Ride-by-Wire and twin ignition, while the motorcycle is equipped with a stainless-steel primary and secondary silencer.

The LC4 engine has long been an important part of KTM’s dual-sport and adventure heritage, and in the 690 RALLY it provides a combination of strong torque, relatively low weight and long-distance performance. The engine is designed to deliver usable power across a wide range of terrain, whether the rider is picking a way through technical trails or covering faster open sections.

KTM has also placed considerable emphasis on durability and serviceability. The 690 RALLY features a 15,000km oil-change interval, allowing riders to cover significant distances between scheduled maintenance stops. For a motorcycle designed to travel deep into remote territory, reducing the frequency of major service requirements can be just as important as increasing fuel range.

The electronic package has been developed specifically with off-road riding in mind. The RALLY ride mode allows riders to adjust characteristics such as throttle response and traction control to suit different surfaces, while Quickshifter+ enables clutchless upshifts and downshifts. A Braktec hydraulic clutch and braking system provides additional control when riding technical terrain.

Off-road ABS is also fitted, giving riders greater freedom when the surface becomes loose. The system allows the rear ABS to be disabled while maintaining front-wheel ABS, while riders can also completely deactivate the ABS when required. This gives experienced off-road riders the ability to choose the level of electronic intervention appropriate for the terrain.

Underneath the rally bodywork, the 690 RALLY uses a powder-coated chromium-molybdenum steel trellis frame. The chassis has been engineered around a 62.3-degree steering head angle, 121mm of trail and a 1,506mm wheelbase, providing a balance between stability at higher speeds and agility when negotiating tighter and more technical terrain.

Suspension is supplied by WP, with a 48mm WP XPLOR USD fork providing 265mm of front-wheel travel. The fork offers compression and rebound adjustment, while the rear suspension uses a WP XPLOR shock operating through a Pro-Lever linkage system. The rear shock features high- and low-speed compression adjustment, rebound adjustment and preload adjustment, allowing the suspension to be tailored to different terrain, riding styles and loads.

The motorcycle’s off-road credentials continue with its 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel combination. Spoked aluminium rims measure 1.85 x 21 inches at the front and 2.50 x 18 inches at the rear, with Mitas E07 tyres fitted as standard. This traditional rally and enduro wheel combination provides the ability to roll over obstacles while maintaining the stability and tyre availability expected from a serious adventure machine.

Braking is handled by Brembo, with a 300mm front disc and twin-piston floating calliper complemented by a 240mm rear disc and single-piston floating calliper. The motorcycle also uses a 520 X-ring chain designed to withstand the demands of both extended travel and off-road riding.

Despite its substantial fuel capacity and additional rally equipment, KTM has kept weight under control. The 690 RALLY weighs a claimed 161.5kg without fuel, giving it a significant advantage over larger adventure motorcycles when the route becomes technical. Anyone who has spent time riding difficult terrain knows how quickly additional weight can become a liability, particularly when the motorcycle needs to be lifted, redirected or manoeuvred through challenging sections.

Ground clearance stands at 265mm, while the seat height is 935mm. The tall stance is a clear indication of the motorcycle’s priorities, providing the clearance required to negotiate rocks, ruts, deep tracks and other obstacles without compromising the chassis’ long-travel suspension capability.

Rider ergonomics have also been carefully considered. The cockpit and bodywork are designed to allow unrestricted movement around the motorcycle, making it easier to transition between seated and standing riding. Wide, mud-resistant footpegs help maintain consistent footing in difficult conditions, while optional rubber inserts can be fitted when additional comfort is required during longer road sections.

The result is a motorcycle that occupies a unique position in KTM’s range. It offers much of the agility associated with a lightweight enduro motorcycle, but combines that with the fuel capacity, wind protection, navigation capability and high-speed stability required for serious long-distance adventure riding.

That combination could make the 690 RALLY particularly attractive to riders who find larger adventure motorcycles too heavy for their preferred type of riding but still want the ability to cover substantial distances. With 20 litres of fuel, 161.5kg claimed weight without fuel, 265mm of ground clearance and long-travel WP suspension, the KTM has been designed to remain capable when the route becomes increasingly difficult.

The rally tower and integrated windshield also make the motorcycle better suited to high-speed liaison sections than a conventional enduro machine. Riders can cover significant distances between off-road stages while benefiting from greater wind protection, before returning to the dirt and making full use of the motorcycle’s long-travel suspension and lightweight chassis.

KTM’s Rally Raid heritage is clearly visible throughout the motorcycle, but the 690 RALLY is not intended simply to imitate a competition machine. It has been designed as a motorcycle that can be used for genuine long-distance exploration while retaining the performance and character expected from a KTM.

The company’s philosophy surrounding the motorcycle is centred on escaping the familiar and discovering what lies beyond it. The 690 RALLY is intended to take riders away from established routes and deeper into remote environments, where the motorcycle becomes a tool for exploration rather than simply a means of transportation.

Production of the 2027 KTM 690 RALLY is scheduled to begin at KTM’s Austrian production facility in September 2026, with the motorcycle expected to arrive at authorised KTM dealers from October 2026. South African pricing and local availability have yet to be confirmed, so riders in South Africa will need to wait for details regarding local allocation and pricing.

With its 692.7cc LC4 engine producing 79 PS and 73 Nm, 20-litre fuel capacity, 161.5kg claimed weight without fuel, 935mm seat height, 265mm ground clearance, WP XPLOR suspension, Brembo brakes, 21/18-inch wheels, rally tower, integrated windshield, TFT display, navigation, ride modes, Quickshifter+ and off-road ABS, the 2027 KTM 690 RALLY is a comprehensive return to KTM’s long-distance Rally Raid philosophy.

More than simply another adventure motorcycle, it is a machine designed to encourage riders to leave the familiar behind and keep going when the road disappears. Lightweight, powerful and equipped for serious distance, the 690 RALLY could be one of the most interesting additions to KTM’s adventure line-up in years.
